The usual Eurovision Song Contest scenario is that the UK don’t even get off the starting blocks in the voting, however this year everything could change. Watch out Europe as this year we have a very lethal weapon on our side – Andrew Lloyd Webber. Not only has he composed the tune but also has been responsible for finding the singer that will perform at the Eurovision Song contest 2009 which will be held in Moscow. The British public voted for 21 year old eastender Jade Ewan, which seems to have further fuelled speculation that the Eurovision Song Contest trophy will be back in the UK at long last. Betfair even have the UK placed in the top four in the betting favourites for this market. Of course it is well known that public opinion in good old ‘Blighty is that some countries are politically biased and give their neighbouring nations higher marks, and the reason we come bottom or there abouts is that we are the victims of European antipathy. It couldn’t possibly be the fact that we are in the habit of sending acts that are, well to put it bluntly, modestly average. It has seemed for at least the last decade that the UK seems to be fixed firmly in the 70’s with the Brotherhood of Man’s winning entry.Loathe to move away from what was regarded as a winning formula but failing to realise that this isn’t what Euro pop is all about anymore. Of course we hadn’t reackoned on Ronan Keating writing the Danish entry called ‘Believe Again’, it remains to be seen whether this will be an advantage for Denmark, if you are betting on this market the odds currently at Betfair are 37/1 so as far the bookies are concerned not as likely a contender as the UK entry. Check out Betfair for the latest odds, as it is a fact that the bookies seem to be giving the UK a fighting chance in the betting stakes.
