Who would have thought that Chelsea and Portsmouth have so much in common. Clearly their positions in the Premier League are not the common ground referred to, with Chelsea ranked fourth in the table and Portsmouth a more humble 16th. No, the shared ground is the fact that both clubs have recently sacked their managers which necessitated looking for suitable replacements. The shock sacking of Luiz Felipe Scolari after only 7 months in the Chelsea managers job created a flurry of interest with bookies both online and on the high street, all clamouring to provide odds for the newly created market. Betfair the online betting site were offering special football bets on this market as well as all the more usual odds for football bets, sports or novelty bets. Betfair had the newly vacated Chelsea manager position with one main contender, that of Guus Hiddink with odds of 4/9, Kevin Keegan was considered to be a complete outsider with odds of 999/1. Betfair clearly gauged the market well, as their favourite Guus Hiddink has been reportedly given the new Chelsea manager position, however this is yet to be officially confirmed and it is unclear as yet if this would be more of a caretaker role until a more suitable candidate can be found. Chelsea were obviously keen to get someone at the helm as quickly as possible, however at time of writing the Portsmouth manager market was still very much open at Betfair. Currently Betfair are offering odds of 12/5 for both Sven Goran Eriksson and Avram Grant to replace Pompey’s previous manager Tony Adams. Tony Adams had only been Portsmouth’s manager since October of last year when he took over from Harry Redknapp. Adams had never really got his teeth into the role and a series of disappointments have left the team floundering close to relegation.
