![]() Ladbrokes the online betting site and high street bookmakers have launched a ‘Bet British’ campaign to highlight the benefits to the public of placing a bet with them as opposed to some of the other telephone and online betting sites. Ladbrokes are drawing attention to the fact that they are not only a high volume employer with over 15,000 people employed in the UK alone, but also that they are a UK licensed bookmaker, and as such pay high amounts in tax and horseracing levies. Ladbrokes are keen that the public and in particular the regular punters who place a bet online are aware that most of their competitors are in fact based abroad employing staff abroad and also not paying such a high proportion of tax, which in some cases is as low as 1%. Ladbrokes advertising campaign features a joint of packaged beef with the slogan “As British as British Beef” to highlight what they feel is largely unknown by the general public. They also include in the advertisement the startling fact that they alone were responsible for paying 34% of the total levy for the Horserace betting industry in 2007/08 which is more than any other betting company, in fact Ladbrokes paid a massive £245m in taxes last year. The advertising campaign will feature in the Racing Post and it is hoped by Ladbrokes that it will encourage the betting public to think about where they place their bets to make the most for the British public as a whole. Many of the other betting sites who advertise in the Racing Post are located in places such as Gibraltar, Aldernay, Isle of Man or Malta and as such do not employ as many British people nor do they pay such a high amount of taxes.
