Manchester United have been crowned the best club in the world after winning the final against Liga de Quito in the Fifa Club World Cup, adding yet another title to their already impressive haul of trophies. Wayne Rooney, named Player of the Tournament, scored the winning goal late in the Fifa Club World Cup match much to the chagrin of the opposing team. Quito must have felt assured of a win as Manchester United had been reduced to ten men due to defender Nemanja Vidic being sent off. However United proved they were a force to be reckoned with the winning goal the result of excellent teamwork between Cristiano Ronaldo and Rooney 16 minutes before the final whistle of the Fifa Club World Cup match.

Vidic’s red card received for elbowing Quito player Claudio Bieler in the face, will keep the Serbian player out of the Manchester United team for the first leg of the forthcoming Champions League tournament in Feburary 2009. Bieler himself was not entirely without blame during the match as he had fouled Ronaldo very early on, in fact at times it was as if winning the Club World Cup was second place to the South American team with the first being to foul Ronaldo at every given opportunity. Clearly tensions were high and with so much riding on the performance, it was Manchester United who continually stepped up to the plate – although it has to be said this was not their best ever performance. In fact the lack of defence by Quito could have given Manchester United a much better score were it not for Jose Cevallos's sterling goalkeeping. Edwin Van Der Sar managed to save the only real threat to Manchester United’s goal in the 63rd minute when Manso took a superb left footed shot.

This puts Manchester United in the history books with the first win for an English Club in the current tournament format.
