RBS 6 Nations

The Rugby RBS 6 Nations 2009 is proving to be a real mixed bag. Each side has played two games apiece so far with Ireland placed first and Wales second on the top of the leaderboard with 4 points each, England and France are in third and fourth position respectively, and Scotland and Italy are floundering in fifth and sixth place. It is of course very early days in the competition and none of us can really predict who will win, current favourites with 888 Sport are obviously Wales with current betting odds of 10/11 and outsiders are Scotland with odds of 200/1, Ireland has odds of 7/4 and England’s are currently 16/1.

Wales have been putting everything into their games to date and the game against England at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on the 14th February was rugby as it should be played. England was clearly outclassed by the Welsh and there was an unfortunate lack of discipline with two players in the sin bin which caused their undoing. Nonetheless England put up a really sterling fight, with the final score Wales 23 England 15.

A touch of Roman chagrin with boos and hisses from the crowd (which wouldn’t have been out of place in the ancient Roman Colosseum), was dispensed to the Italian Rugby team after losing to Ireland on Sunday. The throng of Italian ‘supporters’ who attended the match at the Stadio Flaminio were clearly upset that Italy had once again lost this time 9 to Ireland’s respectable 38. The Italian coach Nick Mallett blamed the defeat on poor discipline in both this match and the one played against England the previous week.
